Sea Bear 3rd Engineer Sailor Barney Bear DSM - Retired Sea Bear 3rd Engineer Sailor Barney Bear, DSM - Retired

Sailor Barneys Home Cave

Sailor Barney Bear has retired, had an offer on the Battle Street Boatyard and is off to Maine..............

If you are looking to trade or an old old pal from the old old country you can call him Sailor Barney but until you've handed over the cash it's just plain old Barney Bear to you.

Have a mooch around , read Sailor Barney Bears stories, try and figure out how a Salty Old Sea Bear like him lived such a wonderful exciting life amongst Forests,Cities and on the Oceans at some of the best times to be a Bear since Friar Tucks days.

Make no mistake Sailor Barney Bear wants to sell up, he's tired of his wanderings and no longer needed in a ships engine room, Barney Bear knows like all smart Bears when its time to go off to the mountains and make honey. And that time has come for this old Sea Bear.

Sailor Barney Bear went to sea as a very young cub with his Pop on the Bovril Boats down the Medway and since that first short voyage he knew that the only Bear to be was to be a Sailor Bear t. A Seabar as they called sailor Bears back in the old country !!

After a lifetime of working on the Sea Sailor Barney Bear is retiring to Maine to make Honey wine and tell the little cubs stories by the cave fire. Drop by for a few good tales , bear hospitality , a glass of ice cold vodka and a lovely fresh whole salmon or two !

Sailor Barney Bear

The Last Trade of Operation Husky - 1943 -2013

Must be loved and respected or you'll have Sailor Barney and the Sea Bears to deal with.

This is one for the history books according to Sailor Barney Bear !!! Make no mistake he'll tell you this wonderful canvas rucksack must be loved and respected or you can't buy it.

In 1943 Barney Bear was stoking engines again but this time for the Kings Schilling and daily tot of Rum, not even honey rum but this was wartime after all.In peacetime Barney had enjoyed being pressed ganged, he always had, two random Salty Old Bears in a dockside bear pit buy you Honey shots and Cheap Honey beer to wash it down all night, then walk you to a nice warm bunk cave. And a job at the end of it, result. Much better than working the Woolwich ferry on a wet London June day.

But this was war time and Barney Bear had joined up like all good Sea Bears did. Barney was bound for Suez when he woke up in his bunk to find himself surrounded by snoring Desert Bears from the 2nd Battlalion Witshire Regiment sleeping on tanks and on the backs of yellow dessert camo painted trucks. Now he knew he was in the Royal Navy and Barney had a job to do.

Bears can Surf - Peru 1998

The best coffee in Peru and the most mixed up Bear on a board

15 years ago Sailor Barney Bear sailed into Peru at Port Calloa nera Lima and decided to take a little road trip instead of carrying on south with the Cargo ship he'd joined in Brazil.

Bears like to drive and Sailor Barney Bear had spent some time driving in the Royal Sea Bear during his time in East Berlin after the war.So it wasn't unlike Barney to pick up an old wreck at the start of his shore leave and sell it on when he headed back to sea a few weeks later.

Winning a lovely big Toyota Mk1 LWB Landcruiser in a Bear pit in Lima playing Ludo Sailor Barney Bear packed up his rods and headed out of town as fast as his Honey Pisco Sour filled legs could carry him. Heading south close to Port Matarani on the Bolivian border Sailor Barney Bear looked forward to his shore leave in the sun. Barney had five weeks until he was due to take over in the Engine room on a Ship bound back to Brazil by way of the Interoceanic Highway.

Whilst Sailor Barney Bear was on the beach at Port Matarani enjoying a little spot of sun he watched the coolest Bear he had ever seen on a surf board hanging the waves like he'd been born in the Ocean. When the dude came in off the surf Barney Bear naturally like all good bears would , went and said hi. The Bears chatted for a while over a bottle of cold Peruvian Palo Beer, Ernie the surf dude , told him all about his dream to surf the cold waters of the world.

Ernie Bear was a lunatic Surf Bear, he wanted to surf Iceland, Greenland and Cornwall anywhere but the hot beaches of South America !! Barney Bear could not  believe it and told Ernie he must be the only Surf Bear who wanted to Cold Water Surf , all the other Surfing Bear dudes Sailor Barney Bear had bumped into had wanted the exact opposite.

By the end of his short stay at Port Matarani Ernie the Surf Bear had taught Sailor Barney Bear how to stand on the board, do cut backs, barrels and drops. He even got Barney Bear into a wetsuit !!

A few years later Sailor Barney Bear got a postcard at the Boatyard from Ernie, turns out that crazy old fool of a Bear had got his dream to surf cold water after all. The card said Ernie had moved to Cornwall and hooked up with a load of other Bears and formed their own Cold Water Surf Sleuth in Port Agnes called Finisterre and that the next time Saolr Barney Bear made dock in Falmouth he should drop by.

Well he did and you can too at https://finisterre.com , go see Ernie and tell him Barney Bear sent you.

Gambling winnings and White Honey Beer on the Rhine

Back in the days of the Iron Curtain , the days of Philby, Cambridge recruits and crooked art dealers Sailor Barney Bear took a ticket on a packet steamer as a stoker down below on a slow leuisrely cruise down the Rhine.

In the engine room he relaxed with the other Stoker Bears old friends from all over Europe, drinking fine German White Honey Beer and Barenjager.

Working in the engine room alongside Barney Bear was a mixed Sleuth of Russian and German Bears who liked nothing better in the evening after their shift to play a game of "Bar agere dich niche" and drink too much Barenjager.  Barney Bear didn't mind the Barenjager but the Bears played for money and good Bears don't gamble.

However every pay day the Stoker Bears got silly drunk and played for serious money and Barney Bear decided that this one particular night when the ship was moored in Koln he would join the game. But not the drinking. Needless to say a sober smart bear always out wits a drunk stupid bear and trust Barney Bear these bears were stupid, Winnie the Pooh kind of stupid. Barney Bear never much cared for that idiot Pooh, whining, moaning and hanging around with that tall stringy boy with the basin haircut freaked him out a bit.

Early next morning while the ship was still moored in Koln Barney Bear headed into town to find a old Yiddish Bear he knew from way back who still might have a stall at the Flohmark Wilhelmplatz. Sure enough as close to his pre war pitch as possible there was the old Yiddish Bear and so was this exquisite oil painting, Barney Bear fell in love straight away. Using his winnings from the night before playing "Bar agere dich nicht" (LUDO) he bought this fine example of post modernist Barhaus" painting and another by the same artist from the Yiddish Bear.

The old Bear claimed the two still lifes originated in New York but were left in Germany before the war by a wealthy American Yiddish art dealer. Barney Bear didn't believe a word of it. Yiddish Bears were known to be the finest story telling bears in the world, always good value on a Bears nights as a bit of light entertainment.

Bobs Budapest Period

When the weather was fine Central Europe in the summer was the most beutiful place on earth for Sailor Barney Bear. Every August between 1952 and 1969 Barney vacationed on Lake Balatan near Budapest Hungary.

Relaxing in his familes Dacha on the shore lineof Lake Balatan hidden from view by the thick canopy and dense undergrowth of the Hungarian pine forest Barney fished for Carp and sipped sweet Honey {Topeki} in the evenings and sketching during the day.

One late August evening his old friend Hubert showed up looking for a place to chill and enjoy the first of the summers honey harvest.

Barney has promised this Feed sack to one of his old buddies for helping him on one too many occasions but in true Bear fashion Barney has forgotten his promise.

Duck Barney !!

Why Barney stayed at the McBurney Y on W14th Street instead of the Chelsea was simple, it was all down to one dramatic night when that equally dramatic fellow Sid turned up for the first time at the Chelsea and that poor girl got murdered Murdered !!. Dreadful business, not the kind of goings on a Seabar wants to be mixed up in. A very Honey Rum affair indeed.
